General / About the Service
Anyone in Bury St Edmunds who finds it difficult to get out and about — because of mobility needs, lack of transport, loneliness, or isolation. We also welcome bookings on behalf of family members, carers or care homes.
Yes — all our rickshaw rides are completely free.
We offer short, uplifting “joy-rides” around town, park visits, trips to local landmarks or simply a gentle journey for fresh air and companionship. We also help with transport where needed (subject to volunteer availability).
Yes — rides are pre-booked. When you book, we’ll confirm the time, pick-up address, and any special requirements so that our volunteers can prepare accordingly.
We aim to make our service inclusive and accessible. If you need extra support (e.g. wheelchair-accessible rickshaw or assistance), please let us know when booking — we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Volunteering
We’re always looking for volunteers from all walks of life: riders, Chatty Chums (companions), admin support, repair helpers — if you have the time, a caring attitude, and are willing to help, you’re welcome.
No — our rickshaws are electric pedal-assist, so you don’t need to be a super-fit cyclist. Full training and support are provided.
- Riders — take passengers (usually two at a time) on pre-booked trips.
- Chatty Chums — accompany solo passengers to provide companionship and conversation.
- Admin / Reception — coordinate bookings and manage ride logistics (from a virtual control room).
- Repair / Maintenance Helpers — help with light maintenance or quick repairs to keep bikes safe and road-ready (where applicable).
Yes — all volunteers receive full training and support for their role.
It depends on the role. Many volunteers give just a few hours a week or a shift that fits their schedule — but every bit helps.
No — since our rickshaws are pedal-assist and not motor vehicles requiring a driving licence, no special driving licence is needed.
Donations & Support
You can make a donation via our online form on the Support/Donate page, or — if you prefer — give cash directly to a volunteer when you use a ride.
Donations help us cover essential costs such as: maintenance and repairs, volunteer safety equipment, garage/storage costs, insurance, volunteer training and coordination, and outreach materials.
Yes — you can become a sponsor, help with fundraising, volunteer your time, or even offer practical support (e.g. helping at events, sharing about us, etc.).
Booking & Ride Logistics
You can contact us via phone (01284 339449), email or via the online booking form on the “Request a Ride” page. We’ll confirm details and arrange volunteer support.
Yes — many bookings are made by carers, family or care homes on behalf of someone who would benefit.
If you need to cancel or change a booking, please contact us as soon as possible so we can inform the volunteer and try to re-allocate the ride.
Our rickshaws are available Monday to Saturday throughout the year (subject to volunteer availability).
Safety & Accessibility
Yes — we carry out regular maintenance and safety checks on all our rickshaws. We also provide training to riders and support volunteers to ensure safe, comfortable rides.
We take the safety and well-being of passengers and volunteers seriously. Relevant insurance and safeguarding measures are in place. Any personal information provided is treated confidentially and with respect.
If weather or road conditions are poor, we’ll discuss the best options with you. Safety always comes first — if a ride isn’t safe or comfortable, we may need to reschedule or offer a different arrangement.
